We reached for the same record. I took it home. You walked me there.
For Eli, from Mara
Side A / 01
Side A
At the little record shop on Grove Street. We both reached for the same Nina Simone album, and you let go first.
You always choose Side B.
You let me buy the record, then waited beneath the awning while the rain came down. You asked what I would play first. We kept talking for ten blocks, all the way to my door.
02 / Track two
The first song in the new place
The long way around the living room.
The part we never tell the same way twice.
The first step never counts.
♪♫♩♪♬♩♫♪
Which memory captures the relationship best?
Our first Sunday in the apartment, when the boxes were still closed but the turntable was already playing.
There were records against the wall and nowhere proper to sit. You moved the coffee table aside, held out your hand, and made one unfinished room feel like home.
03 / Liner notes
The way you notice
01 / You remember which record I need before I say it.
What do you appreciate most?
The way you notice. You warm my mug, slow down when I stop at a window, and remember which record I need before I say it.
You make ordinary days feel looked after. It happens in gestures so small that no one else would photograph them, but they are the part I want to keep.
04 / Track four
Our small language
When the last track ends, you ask, ‘One more song?’ I always say, ‘Always.’
M + ESIDE A / 04
One more song?Always.
A story kept in the margins.Always, one more song.
It is our smallest promise. The answer means yes to the record, and also to staying in the room a little longer, choosing each other again without making a ceremony of it.

The next side

Always.05 / 05
What should the final message say?
I would choose all of it again: the record, the rain, the boxes, and every slow turn around the room.
I do not need a grander version of our life. I want more of this one, with you. When this side ends, turn it over. I will still be here.
